What is a Blender Bomb?

What is this magical recipe, you ask? While I love green smoothies and know that they are made with whole food, plant-based ingredients, sometimes I want to boost them even more. Smoothie cubes like the turmeric ones below were specifically created to help fight inflammation.

Each ingredient holds anti-inflammatory properties to help your body naturally calm down. Amazing, right?

To make these wonderful cubes, add all the ingredients to your blender and puree.

How to Store Smoothie Cubes

2 white ice cube trays full of turmeric blender bombs ready to be stored.

You should end up with four cups that you can distribute between ice cube trays. If you didn’t quite blend enough, add water until you reach four total cups.

After the cubes are completely frozen, store them in a freezer-safe container until you’re ready to use. I’ve got silicone freezer bags of each of my blender bomb recipes so that I can grab what I need when I need it.

whole food ingredients to fight inflammation including pineapple, black pepper, lemon, fresh turmeric and orange juice.

Taming Inflammation Through Plants

Many Americans struggle with inflammation in one form or another. Instead of loading myself up on supplements, I’m choosing to use the plants that contain what my body needs to fight my inflammation directly.

If you struggle with chronic inflammation then regularly eat the plants on this list or whip up the turmeric cubes recipe below:

Blender Bomb FAQs

What is a blender bomb?

My blender bombs are a combination of plant ingredients targeting a specific goal, like combating inflammation or a vitamin C boost. Blend them up and freeze to toss into smoothies when you need a boost.

How do blender bombs work?

Most of my blender bomb recipes are to use 4 cubes to replace 1/2 cup to 1 cup of fruit in a smoothie. My fiber smoothie cubes can be blended with the liquid of your choice to make a smoothie all by themselves.

What is a blender bomb smoothie?

You can turn these blender bombs into a smoothie by themselves, or add to any smoothie you want by replacing 1/2 to 1 cup of fruit with these cubes.

Blender Bombs for Inflammation

An anti inflammatory blender bomb may help naturally calm inflammation and pain, as well as provide essential nutrients, thanks to anti-inflammatory superstars turmeric, pineapple, flaxseed oil, lemon and ginger.
Prep: 4 hours
Total: 4 hours
Author: Jen Hansard
Course: Natural Remedy, Smoothie
Cuisine: Healing, Plant-Based
Serves: 32 cubes

Ingredients

  • 3 cups pineapple
  • 8 tbsp flaxseed oil
  • 8 tbsp lemon juice
  • 4 tbsp ginger root finely minced
  • 4 tbsp honey optional
  • 8 tsp fresh turmeric or 4 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • water if needed

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients into a blender and puree until smooth. If needed, add a little water. If there isn't 4 cups of puree, add enough water to equal 4 cups.
  • Pour into two 16-well standard ice cube trays. Place in freezer for at least four hours up to overnight, until frozen solid. Pop cubes out of tray and transfer to a resealable, freezer-safe bag or container.
  • To use, add 4 cubes to your favorite smoothie in place of 1/2 to 1 cup fruit. (See notes below for more info.)

Notes

  • For an extra boost of bromelain (and if using a high-speed blender) don’t remove the hard fibrous core of the pineapple. This is where the highest concentration of bromelain is found.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil can be used to replace the flaxseed oil.
  • If allergic to pineapple, swap with the equivalent of fresh apples or pears, just keep the peels on.
  • Canned pineapple won’t contain bromelain any more, so use fresh or frozen if possible.

I made these last night and had them in my smoothie this morning!!! They are SO good! It gave my kale mango smoothie a nice lemony zing and reminded me of the Mean Green juice that I love from Joe Cross. My husband has a herniated disc and struggles with sciatica and other back pain and I’m hoping these will help calm the inflammation!!!

    1. Hi. I read your review. Thanks for it. I also hope you guys find the help and possible solution for your husband’s pain.. check The Miracle Ball Method. By Elaine Petrone. I have found her method helpful. She does a free event online, once a month, which I found helpful for understanding the book better. I hope to one day be able to help people through this method, but am not currently affiliated. Also, she can help online, but once a month she does a free event, just to clarify, and see if you are interested.

I wasn’t sure about adding milk to this recipe- I would usually add water or coconut water to citrus smoothies. But it made it creamy without compromising on the fresh taste. I used homemade oat milk. The colour is bright and vibrant for a happy day ahead!
4 stars because I’d like to try it with water next time 🙂

Your recipes along with the informative information about the ingredients used is simply amazing. I have food allergies & food sensitivities to almost everything that I was eating. I had to switch to a vegan lifestyle for health reasons. Finding this website with healthy, vegan style foods & smoothies is a life saver for me. It presents healthy recipe choices and priceless information that helps me to make right food choices to better my health and still be able to eat foods that taste good.

Made this today in smoothie form, making the cubes tomorrow…thank you SO much, my allergies had been really acting up, and this made my body just feel so much better. I have spinach cubes in the freezer as well as frozen bananas, I learned how to do all of this from you guys! Thank you so much..I can’t wait to get flax seed oil from Trader Joes!

Excellent recipe. I also used frozen pineapple, worked just as good, but I will try the 100% pineapple in a can this week for the cubes recipe. Thank you again! Instant relief, I couldn’t believe it. Oh, I subbed Flax Seeds and made sure to pulse them really fine in the blender, and then added the frozen pineapple and other ingridents, mine needed a little bit of water, but it still worked just as good!

    1. That’s great, Rebecca! And just to let you know, we prefer to use fresh or frozen pineapple as opposed to canned because the canning process neutralizes the wonderful bromelain found in pineapple (the enzyme with powerful anti-inflammatory properties that reduces swelling). Remember, you can always buy frozen and let it thaw in the fridge overnight. 🙂

I totally understand thanks for the tips, my Trader Joes didn’t have fresh pineapple yet so I got the frozen…but I’m trying the cubed smoothie today….how do you reccommend using them in a smoothie? with water or milk?

Thank you for the great recipe…:)

    3. Hey Rebecca, I think it depends on personal preference but I’d blend them in a smoothie with tropical fruit, with either water or milk as a base.

Today I made the Tumeric Booster Smoothie Cubes. I am very interested in the anti-inflamatory effects. I used apples with the skin on for the fruit and olive oil instead of flaxseed oil. The smell of apples and ginger are dominant so far. Into the freezer now and tomorrow into the smoothie.

    This is ALSO a TEN!
They are SO fragrant and could just drink as is (in a shot-size form, like shots of freshly pressed wheat grass)!
    They are THAT good!
A MUST to add to your smoothie-making adventures!
Cheers to kicking inflammation’s butt! 😉

    1. So glad you love them, Elizabeth! Thank you for the great review!! 🙂

I love all the ingredients in this one. So easy to add to a smoothie for that added boost. Thanks for the recipe!

  10. hi,

I love your blog! How do you use the turmeric cubes? Do you put them in a drink or do you just eat them as a popsicle?

    1. Thank you! We like to add the cubes to our smoothies, sometimes in place of some of the fruit. For example, you can use 1 cube for an extra boost or 3-4 cubes in place of 1/2 to 1 cup fruit. Enjoy!

  11. I purchased your 21 day cleanse a few years ago and have changed computers and lost my copy.i Can I still access or do I need to repurchase
