Adventure's out there! The summer months are made for the most epic road trips. For us, anything to get us out of the Florida heat during the summer months is a win! Right now I'm on an epic trek with my kiddos that is taking us from Tampa, FL to upstate NY… pretty much to the Canadian border.
Since we're on the road in a Prius for three weeks, I knew I needed to get serious about finding the best road trip travel snacks. Don't get me wrong, Sour Patch Kids and Good n Plenty's are always first to mind, but they certainly are not the best choice– haha! Especially for long road trips like this when we need snacks that will fuel my body and curb my sweet tooth. For that, I def lean towards snacks that are nutritious and give us the energy we need… without leaving us feeling super heavy and having to stop to use the bathroom 1,000 times. I can only take so many public bathrooms.
Clare and Jackson have been road tripping since Jackson was 3 years old and Clare was 1 1/2 when we moved across country from LA to Tampa. My kids are road trip pros by now and each year helps me make better choices as we pack our bags. I asked them to help me come up with a list of our favorite road trip travel snacks:
MASON JAR :: First things first, we never leave home without our mason jars! Of course, before we leave the house, we fill them with frozen green smoothies for the first length of our trip. Once they defrost and we drink those down, we rinse them out at our next location (this trip it was my brother's house in North Carolina) and use them for the rest of the trip to fill up with water at Starbucks (they literally have the best tasting water out there).
DRIED FRUIT :: I'm a huge fan of Made In Nature snacks. They are a staple in my pantry and are packed in my Prius right now too! They have a wide variety of dried fruit and nuts that are readily available at Target, Costco and other major grocery stores. My go to is the dried mango— they have amazing dried mango! What I love most is that it's unsweetened and organic—making it pure plant goodness. Ahh it is so good and keeps me going when I need an energy boost on a long stretch of the drive. I'll crank up my Pandora 90's Rock station and nosh on mango strips. They also happen to be Clare and Jackson's favorite too, which means I am guilty of quietly opening the pack so they don't hear me and ask for some.
DRIED NUTS :: I could literally eat fruit all day long… but I've learned that it's super important to add in plant-based protein too. So nuts and seeds are my jam. I like to keep raw cashews on hand and have recently gotten addicted to Figgy Pops. It's a mix of nuts and fruits in a ball, which makes them perfect to pop in my mouth while driving. Honestly, with Made in Nature, you really can't go wrong though, all of their snacks are Non-GMO and Organic.
APPLES + ORANGES :: These hearty fruits are the best to keep in your bag or stashed in the back of your car. Whenever we start to feel dried out from being in the car for so long, we grab a piece of fresh fruit and soak it all in. The natural sugars and juices always give us an extra boost when we need it most!
Having snacks available while traveling is so important because you just never know when you will be stopping for your next meal. As you know, healthy choices are not always readily available on the road. Having a stash of road trip travel snacks has saved us many of times from “mom flipping off the handle” moments and impulsive fast food drive thrus!
